Sažetak
Type III collagen has an important role in the connective tissues repair and several previous studies showed some polymorphisms of related gene were linked to Achilles tendon pathology and tendinitis. One of the most studied gene is COL3A1. The main goal of this study was to determine if there is a genetic predisposition for tendinopathies associated with the COL3A1 rs1800255 polymorphism in Croatian population. In this study we recruited 48 participants (14 female, 34 male, average age 32) who were competing or highly active recreational athletes and have suffered from Achille tendinopathy (TEN). Control group was composed of 92 athletes (20 female, 72 male, average age 39) who either finished their professional career or were still lightly active, but have never suffered from any form of tendinopathy during their sports activities (CON). Genomic DNA was extracted from the buccal epithelial cells and pyrosequencing method was used for genotype determination. Results showed that COL3A1 rs1800255 ancestral allele (G) was associated with the lower risk for developing tendinopathy demonstrating the protective role (p=0.0225, OR=0.5454, 95%CI=0.324-0.918), whereas allele (A) was associated with susceptibility for developing tendinopathy (p=0.225, OR=1.834, 95%CI=1.089-3.087). The genotype G/G was associated with the protective role regarding developing tendinopathies (p=0.019, OR=0.422, 95%CI=0.205-0.866), and, lastly, the genotype A/G showed tendency towards the higher odds of developing tendinopathy (p=0.078, OR=19.013, 95%CI=0.931-3.885). These findings suggest that there is some association between the COL3A1 rs1800255 polymorphism and the risk of developing tendinopathies in Croatian population as well as that G/G genotype has protective role. Some previous studies have reported that rs1800255 is associated with ACL tears. However, this was a small-scale study and these findings should be supported by the study of a larger scale.
