Sažetak
The paper analyses Croatian adjectives formed with the prefix među- ‘inter-’ through prefixal-suffixal formation. This morphological construction is fairly productive in contemporary Croatian, accounting for some 150 adjectives (freq ≥ 10) that were extracted from hrWaC, the largest Croatian corpus. The author of the most comprehensive manual on Croatian word-formation, Babić (2002), mentions a number of such adjectives. However, older dictionaries (the Dictionary of Croatian or Serbian Language (Budmani, 1904-1910) and Benešić (1957)) list a number of nouns formed with the prefix među- (e.g. međučin 'entr'acte), and only about a dozen such adjectives, most of which are hapax legomena. The first dictionary explicitly says that some of these adjectives were formed according to Latin (e.g. međunarodan < Lat. internationalis) and German models (međuvilična [kost] < Germ. Zwiscbenkiefer[knochen] ‘intermaxillary [bone]’). All of this could lead to the hypothesis that the pattern [među-[N]-Suff]Adj did not exist in Croatian about a hundred years ago, and that it has probably become productive under the growing influence of English, which has exerted by far the largest influence on Croatian in recent history (Samardžija 2002: 72), resulting in derivatives such as: međugeneracijski ʻintergenerational’, međudržavni ʻinterstate’ or međugradski 'intercity'. This would mean that this new and relatively productive morphological pattern has emerged in Croatian under the influence of loan-translation.
