Sažetak
During the Cold War, Yugoslavia and the United States used music as a diplomatic tool. Starting in the 1950s, the two countries engaged in cultural cooperation that remained mostly intact regardless of times of increasing political tensions. Each country carefully selected their cultural representatives. These cultural ambassadors were to rebuff stereotypes, demonstrate the high quality of their country's cultural achievements and present their country in a more positive light. This paper will analyze the role American and Yugoslav musicians played in cultural diplomacy between Yugoslavia and the United States. The paper will analyze images Yugoslavs and Americans had of each other and the diplomatic role envisioned for musicians in helping their country achieve their foreign policy goals.
