Sažetak
St Francis of Assisi was a contemporary of the Fourth Lateran Council. There are indications that he himself participated in it, but there are no specific historical data about it and thus it must necessarily remain a mere presumption. Nevertheless, the conclusions of the council had a great impact on the spirituality and theological reflection of Francis of Assisi, and later on the orientation of the Franciscan order. It was precisely the newly founded Franciscan Order that would become one of the main promoters of the post-conciliar renewal, which would have a bearing upon all spheres of life in the European society of the time, and the Franciscans drew their inspiration from the writings of Francis of Assisi. It was and has remained the “forma minorum” until today – the ideal that every Minor Brother aspires to. It is impossible to speak about the influence of the Fourth Lateran Council on Francis’ writings without recalling the spiritual and social movements that preceded the council, especially the heretical movements of the time, since it was these movements that led to the council in the first place, and this was the social and spiritual atmosphere in which Francis of Assisi and the Franciscan order emerged. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to indicate the main links between the heretical movements and their doctrines, the conciliar answer to them, and the way in which all this was reflected in the writings of Francis of Assisi. Among the more important conclusions of the council that found an important echo in Francis’ writings, the canon about the confession of the Catholic faith stands out, as it strongly defined his notion of the Holy Trinity and his Christocentricity, and especially the doctrine of the Holy Eucharist and sacramental priesthood. These elements are the most prominent in Francis’ writings and contain a strong anti-heretical note, which would also be theorientation of the post-conciliar renewal and the activity of Francis and the first Franciscans. The main feature of Francis’ writings was thus strong ecclesialism: his unconditional support of the ecclesiastical doctrines and the hierarchical Church, as yet another counterweight to the heretical doctrines of the time. The focus of this paper will therefore be on Francis’ writings and the way they reflected the conclusions of the Fourth Lateran Council, the extent to which they shaped his spirituality, and their anti-heretical character.
