Sažetak
Global Internet traffic has grown three times over the last five years. Around 90 percent of the data in the world today was created in the past two years. More than 4 billion people, 55 percent of the global population, now use the Internet, compared to just 250 million in 2000, which was 6 percent of the global population. About 54 percent of households have direct Internet access from home. In the last five years, global mobile phone subscriptions have increased three times, and today there are more contracts with mobile phone providers (7.7 billion) than people in the world. It is the result of digitalisation (the use of digital technologies to reduce costs and/or to change the underlying business model). The business model in the energy sector remained basically unchanged throughout the last century. It is based on a concept in which a vertically integrated company produces, distributes and sells electricity/energy in the market, while customers are simply the consumers of electricity/energy. At the beginning of the 20th century the energy sector started changing since economic growth was based on fossil fuels, and climate change became the result of greenhouse gas emissions, while greenhouse gas emissions are the result of fossil fuel consumption. The energy sector is in the process of transformation from the centralised electricity production from fossil fuels to a distributed production of electricity from renewable energy sources such as the wind and solar energy. In the last decade, renewable energy capacity has increased faster than any other technology in the world. Digitalisation is crucial for the transformation from one business model to another. Digitalisation is establishing a direct relationship with end consumers and is leading to the creation of new business models. The investments of energy companies in digital technologies have risen sharply over the last few years. Global investments in digital electricity infrastructure and software are growing at a rate of 20% every year, and last year they reached $55 billion globally. This paper analyses the energy sector transformation, digitalisation and a new business model as a result thereof.
