Sažetak
Any educational content acquisition, linguistic one included, has its initial and its final phase. In language teaching, a child's source language is at the beginning of education most often based on the organic idiom, whereas the target language refers to the level of acquisition of the standard language idiom at the end of primary school education. Various linguistic and extra-linguistic factors determine the formation and the level of acquisition of the target language and consequently the vocabulary development i. e. lexical competence. Since primary school children today are exposed to a great variety of different media, it has been observed that their communication is lacking on different levels and their vocabulary is becoming inadequate. Therefore, it is crucial, especially in the mother tongue (Croatian) teaching, to use various techniques that will not only help develop communicative skills, but also enrich pupils' lexis. Accordingly, experimental research is going to be conducted in the first grade of primary school. In one class, Croatian language content presented to pupils with the help of drama techniques, whereas another group used traditional methods. Both groups were tested two days before the beginning of classes and after the experiment. Research results showed better results in experimental group in terms of linguistic and communicative competence in Croatian language that we tested and especially in terms of lexical competence – knowing of words and using in context as better results in lexical density and diversity in their essays. We concluded that using of drama techniques strongly encourage the development of lexis and that students from the experimental group showed better results both in understanding the deeper meaning of a word in different contexts and in expressing greater variety and broadness of lexis, which tested using measures of lexical density and diversity.
