Sažetak
Valuable knowledge on inflammatory or other cutaneous diseases has been gained as a result of characterization of a host of cytokines and of the complex network they form. The pattern of cytokines expressed locally, is critical in modulating the nature, extent and persistence of inflammation in the skin. Both keratinocytes and Langerhans cells produce increased amounts of cytokine mRNA as well as immunoreactive and biologically active cytokines in response to various physical and chemical stimuli. In a number of infectious, allergic or autoimmune diseases, the phenotype of T helper cells, Th1 or Th2 (or more precisely Type I vs. Type II response) influence the outcome of the disease. Similarly, in several postinfectious, allergic or autoimmune cutaneous diseases a clear dichotomy between predominately Type I response or Type II cellular responses were noted.
