Sažetak
INTRODUCTION: Babesiosisis one of the most important diseases of dogs in Croatia the pathophysiology of which is not completely understood. The recent studies suggest that babesiosis should be viewd as two diferent diseases in terms of the underlying patho mechanisms. The first pathomechanism is haemolytic disease (possible immune-mediated). The second pathomechanism is acute and overhelming inflammatory response called systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), which is followed by multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). AIM: The aim of this study was to confirm the involvement of acute phase response in the pathogenesis of canine babesiosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty dogs with acute babesiosis, admitted to Clinic for Internal diseases at Veterinary faculty of Zagreb, Croatia, were studied. Measurement of the serum concentration of C-reactive protein and percentage parasitaemia were determined, together with measurement of blood urea nitroge (BUN), creatinine, total protein, albumin, bilirubin, packed cell volume (PCV), white blood cell count (WBC) and platelet count (PLT). Based on the clinical symptoms and laboratory data, the dogs were divided in two groups- uncomplicated and complicated. RESULTS: C-reactive protein concentation was increased (mean 188, 9 mikro g/ml) in all 50 studied dogs. It was significantly higher in the group of dogs with complicated babesiosis (p less than 0, 01). The concentration of BUN, creatinine and bilirubin were also significantly higher (p less or equal to 0, 01) in the group with complicated babesiosis. There was no significant difference in the PCV, WBC, PLT, total protein concentration and albumin concentration between the groups. All dogs were treated with antibabesial drug. The dogs with complicated babesiosis were also treated sympomatically, depending of complication developed. Six of eleven dogs in complicated group died. None of the dogs in uncomplicated group died. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that the measurement of the C-reactive protein concentration may prove valuable in assessing of severity of babesiosis, and in following the response to antibabesial treatment.
