Physiological Reactions to Stress Test in Patient with Schizophrenia Compared to Healthy Controls
The study examined the physiological responses induced by experimental tasks in a group of 60 patients with schizophrenia compared to 60 healthy controls. The group of schizophrenic patients was in remission, coming from outpatient psychiatric services and had been at a stable treatment for more than 3 months. The mental status of patients was measured by PANSS (Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale for Schizophrenia). Performed experimental tasks were standardized— the Stroop test, the math problem and the preparation of the speech. Follow-up of multiple physiological parameters (skin conductance, respiration, heart rate, and temperature) showed that physiological measures changed simultaneously with experimental tasks, but the highest and statistically significant changes were found in the parameters of heart rate (trend towards LF/HF ratio in the schizophrenia group), which corresponded to the results of the literature and may be useful in understanding the pattern of neurocardiac modulation in patients with schizophrenia.
