From the Universal to the Regional and Back
During and after the war Croatia had to rebuild the demolished houses and flats in several of its regions. Despite respective cultural characteristics of particular regions the impressive state renovation project could not completely respect neither the local conditions demands. Due to the fact that regionalism is interfering with vernacular architecture it was attempted to locate in the building heritage as well as in the architect's multi-layered imagination that matrix which would respect the demands of life but which would also reject enforced style models. Due to modest financial means and almost non-existent foreign aid the programme defined modest types of flats with their respective floor areas. In these circumstances the architect tried to uncover the hidden possibilities of those flat types which by their flexibility would offer the possibility of enlarging the floor areas. Despite the vulgar pragmatism set by the programme some architectural and ambiental qualities were sought after. Illustrated examples of housing in Ploče, Rab and Vukovar are not offering any radical interventions but are trying to sensibilize both the general public and the user to the recognisable traces of the cultural heritage, without placing any importance on how their creative achievement stands in comparison to foreign examples.
