Examination and preservation of Jewish musical tradition in continental Croatia between the two World Wars

During the thirties of the 20th century in Zagreb, intellectuals and artists of Jewish and especially Zionist circle were intensifying their wish to proclaim their identity and expressing their own artistic creations. Certain musicians of the Jewish origin in Croatia were particularly aware of their roots and were making a special effort within the Jewish community to raise awareness about their own art, especially about music. For that purpose in 1932 was found Jewish Artistic Society Omanut which was until 1941 engaged in publishing and musical publishing in Croatia. One of the main activities of Omanut was nurturing of the Jewish music through educational lectures and organizing the concerts. The leaders of the Society and editors of the Omanut edition were especially advocating performing and publishing of the scores of the Jewish composers from Eastern Europe such as J. Engel, A. Krein, L. Saminski, J. Stutschevski and A. M. Rothmüller. The aim of the work is to research the available archived documents and periodicals of that time which testifies about the activities of the Omanut Society as well as about the other societies such as Judeja and Ahdut, which were between the World Wars taking care about research, nurture and preservation of Jewish cultural and traditional heritage in the area of Continental Croatia. Special focus will be given on the music programs for Jewish parties which were organized on the occasions of Jewish holidays Purim and Hanuka in the public city spaces of Zagreb and Osijek, as well as in other small places of Continental Croatia where Jewish communities were active. The preserved programs of the concerts from Croatian music archives and journal reports regarding Jewish cultural happenings confirm cultural activity of the Jewish societies in nurturing Jewish tradition in the area of Continental Croatia until the World War II.
