Narrative ability of a bilingual girl: Case study
The paper will present the production and comprehension of the narrative of a five-year-old who has been exposed to her mother tongue Croatian as well as to the English language since birth. The narrative ability of this bilingual girl was elicited in two ways – by telling and retelling a story, which was accompanied by questions about the comprehension in both languages. The macrostructure of the produced stories was analyzed in view of the story structure complexity and the words expressing mental states. The research questions directed at the inter-lingual comparison include the following: to what extent does children’s narrative ability differ in two languages when taking into account the macrostructure, words expressing mental states and task type, which macrostructure components and words expressing mental states are best in distinguishing production in two languages, and to what extent do the story structure and words expressing mental states vary while supporting the function of the story content and the eliciting task.
