The influence of age on the outcome of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke

Older age is considered as one of the factors with strong influence on the stroke outcome including the stroke lethality. However, in the available literature this influence was not analyzed selectively in terms of distinguishing between ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to reveal the influence of ge on the hospital lethality of the ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Metods: This retrospective study comprised 2173 patients with acute stroke who were in the period form 2001 to 2005 hospitalized in the stroke unit of the General hospital "Sveti Duh" in Zagareb. The hospital documentation was used as data source. The patients with subaracnoid hemorrhage were not included because they were often sent to the vasular surgery immediately after the diagnosis. Results: There were 1806 (83.1%) patients with ischemic stroke, and 367 (16.9%) patients with hemorrhagic stroke. Total hospital llethality was 21.5%, the letahalitiy in ischemic stroke was 17.4%, and in hemorrhagic stroke 41, 2%. According to the age groups there were the following lethality rates in the ischemic stroke: <50 yr. 4.5%, 50-59yr. 9.05%, 60-69% yr. 13.1%, 70-79% yr. 17.57%, 80-89 yr. 28.88%, >90 yr. 32.65%. The hospital lethality in hemorrhagic stroke were as follows: <50. 40.63%, 50-59 yr. 38.16%, 60-69 yr. 41.84%, 70- 79 yr. 43.56%, >80 yr. 40%. Conclusions: The obtained results showed that only in the group with ischemic stroke the hospita lethality was increasing parallel with increase in age. In the group with hemorrhagic stroke the letalithy rate was about eqal in the all investigated age groups. The causes for this difference are not celar, but they might be related to the different comorbidity in ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.
