Anna Karenina pleše mazurku (O poljskim plesovima u ruskom romanu 19. stoljeća)

The essay undertakes to analyze Polish dances, such as polka and mazurka, which were very popular in nineteenth-century European culture. Polka and mazurka can be found in nineteenth-century Russian novel, especially in those texts in which the ball chronotope played an important role, such as Mikhail Lermontov's A Hero of Our Time, Alexander Pushkin's Eugene Onegin, or Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace. In these texts mazurka occasioned significant changes in the plot development (for example, a duel invitation during mazurka in Eugene Onegin). As Yuri Lotman argues, mazurka was a culminating dance at European balls at the time (Lotman 2006). Further attention is given to the analysis of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, where the Moscow ball scene is the turning point in the plot's development. Young Kitty Scherbatsky expects to be proposed to by Vronsky, but instead, he falls in love with Anna, so one could argue that mazurka changes the hero's expectations in the novel. Furthermore, we have tried to illuminate the correspondence between the choreography position in mazurka during the Moscow ball and on the last day of Anna's life. Namely, the circular part of mazurka's choreography in Anna Karenina contains both concrete and symbolical meanings. In that respect, we argue that the Polish mazurka has served to visualize different aspects of circularity in Tolstoy's novel.
