Mediterranean oaks disease, Biscogniauxia mediterranea
Large-scale dieback of oaks was reported in 2014 in Istria peninsula and island Cres in Croatia. Opportunistic fungus Biscogniauxia mediterranea was confirmed as causative agent of tree dieback. This fungus is known as endophyte normally present in healthy wood and bark tissue and it usually causes symptoms on trees after some kind of stress. In this case, trees suffered severe defoliation by Lymantria dispar and period of drought, after which fungus developed and started to cause dieback.
