Ecological Knowledge And Values as part of Competencies Development of Future Preschool and Elementary School Teachers.

The paper starts from the assumption that knowledge and values, as components of competences, represent components that need special attention in curricula of preschool teachers’ and elementary school teachers’ initial education. The current field of environmental issues and education for sustainable development is focused on continuous research and improvement of teachers’ and preschool teachers’ education with the aim of improving the practice of preschools and elementary schools, and achieving Sustainable Development Goals 2030 (SDG 2030). In this paper, we present research results of ecological knowledge of students enrolled in Teacher Education and Early and Preschool Education studies. The aim was to adapt the measurement instrument, determine knowledge and values, and to determine in particular whether there is a statistically significant correlation and difference between the knowledge, values and, groups of respondents regarding the inclusion of a course dealing with environment and environmental and sustainable development. The sample comprised students enrolled at the Faculty of Teacher Education in Rijeka, and the research was conducted as part of a graduate thesis research. We applied two scales as a measuring instrument: Scale of ecological knowledge and Scale of ecological values by Kaiser, Wolfing and Fuhrer (1999). The research results identified a high arithmetic mean of knowledge and values, statistically significant correlations, and statistically significant differences between groups of respondents regarding course attendance with ecology/environment and sustainable development. The research offers insights into the knowledge and values of students as components of their competences, but it also offers opportunities for further development of competences, i.e., knowledge components and values of initial programs of preschool teacher and elementary school teacher education.
