Lasing and mode selection in erbium doped 70SiO2-30HfO2 coated microspheres

Silica microspheres were coated using an erbium activated silica hafnia thin film in order to produce microlasers. Lasing was observed and the lasing modes were identified. Only the modes whose electric field is located closest to the surface were found to exhibit lasing.
