Importance of Students’ Attitudes about Math for Designing Pre-school Activities
The National curriculum for early-years and pre-school education (2014) recognises mathematical competence as one of the key competences for life-long learning. Its development requires stimulating environment that would enable children to develop mathematical approach to problem solving tasks, various activities and everyday situations. What an early-years educator will do in order to enhance young learners’ mathematical competence in the institutional environment, highly depends on the educator’s attitudes and feeling towards Math as well as their professional competences. Equally important is to have a broad mathematical knowledge and deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. Taking into account the fact that educators play a crucial role in the creation of stimulating environment for the development of mathematical competence, we will present the results of a survey conducted with undergraduate students in the first and the third year of Early-years and pre-school education. The survey focused on their attitudes about Math and previous experience with Math. It will also present an analysis of the mathematical activities chosen by students for exercises in the university courses called Integrated pre-school curriculum and Math in games and entertainment.
