Vernacular influences on neo-Latin of the east Adriatic coast
Could vernacular(s) have influenced the neo-Latin language, style − all in all, the Latin literary expression, and to what extent? This is the question we are basing our paper upon while exploring the neo-Latin tradition of early modern Croatia. In order to provide a general picture of the relationship between vernacular(s) and neo-Latin on the eastern coast of the Adriatic sea, we are establishing a diachronic picture of neo-Latin literary and non-literary production in both languages according to the choice of genre, simultaneously questioning various influences of the vernacular production on neo-Latin texts. The next basic point of this paper are translations – especially those of the authors who managed to translate their own texts from vernacular to Latin an vice versa. These translations enable tracking the authors' style of expression in both – Latin and vernacular – thus providing the platform for exploration of the linguistic influences of the Croatian and Italian languages on their Latin translation. Having taken into account the specific features of Croatian (as Slavic) and Italian (as Romance) languages, we are working towards creating criteria for exploration of Southern Slavic linguistic influences on the neo-Latin language of the early modern period.
