Linguistic aspects of Roma education in Republic of Croatia: state of affairs and perspectives
In the Republic of Croatia, the Constitutional right to education of national minorities in their own language and script is exercised in 3 models – model A, B, and C. Two of them are models of education in a minority language (A and B), while model C is education with a minority language as a school subject. At the moment, Roma national minority is the only minority that does not exercise their educational right in any of the 3 models. Fortunately, recent national reform of education, and in the last decade carried out projects and programs that focused on language, introduced many positive changes to linguistic aspect of Roma education. This paper discuss these changes and their results: from formal recognition and introduction of Croatian as L2 to the attempts to design a curriculum of Roma language(s) and culture.
