Research of Baroque Art in Croatia and Vienna School of Art History
Art History in Croatia, especially in the Northern Part, was formed mainly under influence of Vienna School of Art History, since most of the scholars have studied in Vienna. The ideas of Viennese art history were integrated in all fields of art history, but research of art of the Baroque period was especially close to contemporary development in Vienna. Negative attitude towards this period in early art history in Croatia is inherited from romanticist, for example, writer August Šenoa, but also under the influence of reconstruction of Zagreb cathedral in neo- gothic style after the earthquake of 1880, which replaced damaged baroque building. However, this negative attitude is gradually changing at the beginning of 20th century, primarily due to few authors, including Gjure Szabo (Novska, 1875 - Zagreb, 1943). Schooled in Nuremberg and Vienna, he was under strong influence of A. Riegel. Gradual change towards the art of the Baroque period will be presented in this paper, based on analysis of his reports on monuments in Northern Croatia, published in the Vjesnik Hrvatskog arheološkog društva, from 1912 to 1919, which were the forerunners of Kunsttopographie in Croatia, and the later book Kroz Hrvatsko zagorje (1939). The idea of Kunstwollen is strongly reflected in the evaluation of the monuments and art of that period. These reports were also crucial for the development of the methodology of research - analysis of archival data, the autopsy of a monument - that significantly formed the art history in Croatia long after it. Anđela Horvat, (Krašić, 1911 - Zagreb, 1985) applied most of the Szabo’s methodology and so prolonged influence of the Vienna School into the second half of the 20th century.
