Marco Antonio de Dominis in England
Marco Antonio de Dominis (Lat. Marcus Antonius de Dominis ; Cro. Marko Antonije de Dominis, Marko Antun de Dominis, Markantun de Dominis) (1560- 1624) is probably one of the most intriguing Croatian intellectuals (natural scientist, theologician, and writer) although his life and work are rather unknown in a wider academic circle, not to mention the general public. Reading about him is like following an itinerary across 16th-17th century Europe since he was born on the island of Rab, but his educational needs and aspirations, clerical services and academic positions, enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity took him to places, such as: Loreto, Novellara, Verona, Padua, Brescia, Rome, Prague, Graz, Ljubljana, Senj, Split, Venice, Ancona, Chur, Heidelberg, Hague, London, Cambridge, and Brussels. The current paper deals with the period de Dominis spent in England under the protection of King James I (1616–1622), who granted him the Mastership of Savoy soon after his arrival. He was also named the Dean of Windsor, and received his doctorate from the University of Cambridge. However, under later unfavourable circumstances, de Dominis decided to go to Rome where his life finally ended in a rather unexpected way. This presentation should contribute to considering the relations between Croatia and England behind the European socio-political and cultural background at that time
