Role of Technology in the New Directive on Data Protection in Police and Judicial Cooperation in Criminal Matters
Proposed Data Protection Directive for the police and criminal justice sector, which is to replace the Framework Decision 2008/977/JHA, regulates personal data processing by competent authorities for the purposes of prevention, investigation, detection or prosecution of criminal offences or the execution of criminal penalties, including the safeguarding against and the prevention of threats to public security. Directive is likely to be formally adopted in spring 2016 and implemented in Member States in two years as of its entry into force. The lecture will focus on critical assessment of mechanisms envisaged in the Directive to address risks for citizens' privacy and data protection rights, and which pertain in particular to the growing use of information and communications technologies in various data processing activities covered by the Directive.
