Prednosti i nedostatci učenja stranoga jezika u predškolskoj dobi

This thesis focuses on pre-primary bilingualism and multilingualism. In the first part the author analyses four academic articles, related to the topic of early bilingualism, to determine the advantages and disadvantages of pre-primary second language learning. All of the studies presented in the selected articles indicate that there are almost no disadvantages of pre-primary language learning ; on the contrary, the bilingual children mostly had higher test scores than the monolingual ones. The second part presents the study, conducted by the current author, which compares four (4) multilingual and bilingual children. There were two seven-year- old bilinguals, and two five-year-old multilinguals, of whom three were successive bilinguals and one was a simultaneous learner of Croatian and German, while English was her third language. The study first included a semi- structured interview with their parents for the purpose of gaining insights into: children‟s ability to use language(s), the time they spend learning foreign language(s), language mistakes they make, and how much they actually use the second language. Afterwards the author had a short conversation with the children, who were also given a vocabulary test with the aim to determine their vocabulary knowledge. The findings indicate that multilingual children have a higher vocabulary count, and they are more comfortable while speaking second language(s).
