Optical Retrieval of the Mean Diameter of Suspended Mineral and Organic Particles

The biogeochemistry of coastal and open ocean waters is a function of the particle nature and the particle size distribution (PSD) of the suspended matter. Thus the mean particle size is often used for particle chemical relations and particle sorption/desorption properties. First determine the nature of suspended particles: mineral and organic. Done for our March 2016 field campaign on the shelf/slope in the northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) and the Mississippi River Delta, USA. These data yielded true mass-specific scattering cross sections of mineral and organic matter. From these cross sections we derived a mean particle size for each component. Mean particle sizes checked with LISST data analysed by Risović’s PSD techniques. Now possible to analyse mineral and organic dynamics. GOM results are compared with earlier coastal results
