Collaborative economy as a new form of work environment

The digital tools have introduced new possibilities in the world of work. Now when almost everything is digital this new concept can offer million of possibilities. One of them is collaborative economy where services providers and users are connected by the digital platforms. In the digital work surrounding the “classical” definition of work and “worker” slowly disappears. Instead, this becomes form of work that some jurisdictions recognise as an intermediate category between employment and self-employment whereby some labour protection is extended to the relevant workers as they are found to be in need of this protection even if they do not qualify as “employees” under the applicable legislation. The collaborative economy has transformed the old form of labour markets and introduces the new ones. The work is no more permanent and stabile category, rather it is a system that offers workers freedoms, but no security or control. Authors in the paper discuss the applicability of the traditional regulation on work in digital surroundings. The role of the regulator is to define the situation when the activities have been performed by professionals since the new ways of work offer possibilities for everyone. There are no fixed working hours and workers are able to offer their activities on apps and platforms whenever the wont. In that way workers can benefit from job opportunities that they might not be able to access otherwise and on a flexible-schedule basis, allowing matching work with the performance of other working, family-related, study or leisure activities. Closely connected with labour issue is the future of social security protection systems that should be analysed. Apart from theoretical and legal framework, the nature of work in collaborative economy will be studied empirically.
