REISEBERICHTE ÜBER DALMATIEN IN DEUTSCHER UND FRANZÖSISCHER SPRACHE

In this work similarities and differences between the Dalmatia travelogues written in German and French language are described. Based on a comparative analysis, the authors strive to identify the motifs that confirm the national and cultural identity of authors of those travelogues in Dalmatia. However, all the different motifs cannot be taken as representative ones at the same time, which is why the question is opened of travel motifs that can be elements of a specific cultural discourse and identity. The main emphasis of analysis is on the 19th century, as a golden era for journeys and the period of reflections on the nation and national identity. In this regard, travelogues are an ideal genre, because their subject discovers the mentality and culture of origin, as well as the author’s expectations in terms of different ideas about Dalmatia. Finally, the paper aims to reflect on the manner in which German, Austrian and French authors perceived Dalmatia, i.e. the manner in which two different cultures perceive one another. At the same time, the authors point to the issues faced in selecting the most representative motifs in the creation of German identity.
