The Depth and Breadth of Learning how to Trade Stocks through Simulated Play
When technology is incorporated into learning experiences, it is better when participants have the opportunity to learn through the use of the technology. Simulated learning is one way to connect learning through the use of technology as an integrated, meaningful experience with opportunities to problem solve through successes and failures. In our research, we use case study methodology to examine one case of a preservice teacher who learned to trade stocks through participation in a simulated stock trading game. Exploratory case study methodology guided our data collection and analysis. As the semester progressed, the participant expanded both the depth and breadth of his knowledge of the stock market and the workings of the United States economy. The results showed that he developed a deeper understanding of the stock market through his interactions with the simulation (as well as interactions with other students also enrolled in the simulation).
