Babesiosis and hemostasis

The aim of this study was to determine the efect of babesiosis on the coagulation system in dogs. The test population consisted of 30 dogs diagnosed with babesiosis.Thirthy healthy dogs were used as controls. Citrated plasma was collected before treatment with Imisol and on the 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 10th days after tratment. Various hemostatic parameters were measured using a Amelung KC 10 analyzer (Amelung, Heinrich Amelung GmbH. Lemgo, Deutschland). Pretreatment biochemical and hematologic parameters weremeasured by standard methods using a Technicon RA 1000 biochemical analyzer (Technicon, Tarrytown, New York, USA) and a Serono 9120 hematologic analyzer (Baker Diagnostic Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA). Test results were analyzed using analysis of variance and Tukey´s test. P less than 0.05 were considered significant. RESULTS: The following abnormalities were detected in affected dogs prior to therapy: anemia, thrombocytopenia, increased mean plateled volume, prolonged prothromin time (PT), prolonged activated partial tromboplastin time (aPTT), significantly decreased anti-thrombin lll (AT lll), hyperfibrinogenemia, significantly increased alanine and aspartate aminotransferases (ALT and AST). After therapy most hemostatic parameters returned to reference range. CONCLUSIONS: Babesia-induced hepatocellular damage is suggested by the ALT and AST elevations. Additionally, given the observed thrombocytopenia, prolonged PT, prolonged aPTT, hyperfibrinogenemia, and decreased AT lll, results of the current study suggest the presence of a hypercoagulable, compensated disseminated intravascular coagulopathy associated with babesiosis that appeared to resolve with therapy.
