Complex cooperation of gaseous and solid emissions and BTEX in the persons with environnmental diseases
Air pollution is a huge, difficult and common problem of most of the world's metropolises, where large volumes of genotoxic substances are present due to high traffic and highly developed industries. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) cause distortion of ecosystems and play an important role in shattering health as a whole. It is well known that benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) values in blood and air are interrelated with smoking, smoking exposure (passive smokers) and age and sex, while the volatile organic compounds do not depend on them. The goals and methods of our research were to establish the correlation between BTEX concentration in urine and the appearance of respiratory diseases in the inhabitants of industrial zones, compared with those living in rural areas. The results show that residents of urban industrial areas have statistically significantly reduced values of PIF (inspiratory inhalation), FIVC (Fired Inspirational Vital Capacity), FIV1 (Forced Inspirational Volume in the First Second Test) and FVC (Forced Vital Capacity) and significantly increased concentration of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and o-xylene. Conclusion: BTEX analysis in urine, which is an important and easy way of testing, is a good indicator of environmental status that contributes to better population protection against pollutants in the air, as well as faster diagnosis of COPD and asthma.
