Hempseed Oil: Compounds and Production
Hempseed oil is the most common food product obtained from hemp, and mostly produced by cold pressing of hempseeds. Because of the oil’s high quality, as well as the high content of high- quality compounds in hemp seeds which positively affect human health, this type of oil is very significant. In the past few decades, the Cannabis sativa L. hemp variety has been unfairly neglected because of its similarity to the illegal kind Cannabis indica L. used as a narcotic. The objective of this chapter will be to evaluate the process of oil extraction from hemp seeds by different extraction methods (solvent extraction, supercritical CO2 extraction and mechanical pressing). The composition of fatty acids, tocopherols, pigment and cannabinoid content in different varieties of hempseed oil will be reviewed. The different processes for production of hempseed oil will be compared and evaluated in terms of obtained oil yield and its composition and from the environmental and economic points of view.
