Njemački kalkovi koji su u hrvatski jezik ušli posredstvom češkoga jezika
In the 19th century, industrial development, the development of civil society, progress in cultural institutions, and an increase in concern for language standardization and other linguistic and orthographic issues resulted in the creation of many dictionaries. The problem of the lack of terminology in the Croatian language then became apparent. One of the ways this lack of needed terminology was compensated for was through borrowing or calques. A large number of calques were created using the German language as a model. Because of linguistic purism, these calques were a more acceptable choice to compensate for the required terms. The Czech language, as an acceptable Slavic model, often played an intermediary role between the German and Croatian languages. This article lists and discusses examples of German calques that entered the Croatian language through the intermediation of the Czech language.
