The Role of p53 in Alzheimer’s Disease: Impact on Tau Pathology
Extracellular accumulation of amyloid β peptide and intraneuronal deposition of hyperphosphorylated tau protein are defining clinico-pathological characteristics of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder. Levels of transcription factor p53, which plays an important role in oxidative stress-induced apoptosis, are also found up-regulated in AD brain. We briefly summarized the major p53-mediated molecular events that contribute to pathological changes in AD, with special emphasis on the progression of tau pathology.
