Communication skills in nursing practice with blind people
INTRODUCTION: Communication skills are essential in nursing process. This is ability to sending, listening and receive the information. For better quality of communication process is necessary humanity, empathy and respecting each person’s. Nurses have a crucial role in helping blind person to adapting, especially when she arrives in health institution. The aim of this paper is to investigate the skills of communication, ways and difficult of communication of nurses with blind people. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study participated 121 register nurse of General Hospital Zadar in Croatia. The questionnaire was designed for this study. There included questions on communication skills and perception nurses about difficult in communication. To test the differences between the variables, the Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used, and the correlation was assessed using the Pearson coefficient. Statistical significant considered at p <0.05. RESULTS: There was connection between the direct communication and presenting a blind person (r=0.56 ; p<0.001). Difficulties in communication highlights 35.6%, and the lack of experience, 46.3% of respondents. Lack of experience is resulting in a greater perception of lack of knowledge and skills (r=0.84) and greater need of communication facility (r=0.46), is resulting in communication difficulties ; p <0.001. Nurses with paediatrics and psychiatry experience show better perception about purpose of understanding words and other skills in communication process (p=0, 044). CONCLUSION: The level of experience of nurses has a significance impact on the quality of communication skills in nursing process with blind persons. So, the education of nurses in area of communication is a high priority for elevating the quality of health care for the blind.
