Ramón de Perellós’ Wordly and Otherwordly “Journey to Saint Patrick’s Purgatory”
Journey to Saint Patrick’s Purgatory is a late medieval text written by Ramón de Perellós who was using the form of a diary to describe his peculiar journey to a famous penitential site named Saint Patrick’s Purgatory which was situated in Ireland and visited by various adventurers and sinners in the Middle Ages. In this paper the author analyses the narrative that emerges from the diary, which is set in the well-understood framework of the adventurous journey while at the same time containing many of the conventional elements of medieval visions.
