Ecological Approach to Vegetation Control on Railway lines
Requirements for smooth operation of railway traffic and the need to insure gauge for passing of railway vehicles, whic stipulate elimination of weeds and other vegetation on railway lines, face ever stricter requirements and regulations for environmental protection. In spite of the efforts in weed control to apply various methods which do not include the usage of chemicals, due to high costs of application and limited efficiency, still the dominant role belongs to the treatment by herbicides. In compliance with ever stricter regulations that stipulate limited usage of herbicides, methods are being developed of controlled treatment using means that are biologically decomposed without major harmful effects on the environment, but still efficient enough in their basic intention. The Republic of Croatia is trying to follow modern tendencies and in selecting adequate types of herbicides for this climate, it consults scientific institutions. Recently, a chemical weed killing train of the Croatian Railways (Hrvatske željeznice - HŽ) has been reconstructed with introduction of eletronic control mechanism which allows fully controlled chemical treatment by herbicides.
