The Fourth Lateran Council and the Functioning of Courts in Thirteenth Century Eastern Adriatic

The paper analyses two conclusions of the Fourth Lateran Council that had a significant impact on the operation of medieval ecclesiastical and secular courts: Constitution 8, which sets out the basic rules for an inquisitorial procedure, and Constitution 38, which establishes the obligation of ecclesiastical courts to keep written records of all trials. In addition to this, based on the available original sources, the author follows the changes in the judiciary practice of Eastern Adriatic cities during the 13th century, which resulted from these conciliar conclusions.
