The correlation between impact energy and fracture toughness
The impact energy by Charpy is very simple, fast and cheap but gives valuable facts for evaluate toughness of materials especially for the selection of alloys for different purposes and for the control of the quality of products. For resposnible products exposed during exploitation by dinamical load at nowadays are required plane strain fracture toughness (Kic) as very importantproperty of materials. Since the determination of the fracture toughness is very complicated, slow and expensive, many scientists in the world examine d correlation between impact energy and fracture toughness of materials especially by steels. This paper presents the survey series founded correlations between toughness characteristics of materials and especially investigation this correlations for railway rail steels. The best correlation is determined by formula from Corten and Sailors.
