The Value of Blink-Reflex as a Predictor of Outcome of idiopathic Peripheral Partial Facioparesis
We have done a study to determine the value of Blink-reflex as the predictor of outcome of idiopathic peripheral partial facioparesis. The study has been done on 30 patients diagnosed according to 1CD-X. We stimulated the supraorbital foramen and recorded the response from mm. orbiculares oculi. We measured the amplitudes and the latencies of R1 and R2, R2~E. The measurements were made in the acute phase, and again 1 week, 6 months and one year after. In the group of subjects, in the acute phase, we noted prolonged latencies and reduced amplitudes of R 1 and R2 on afflicted side and normal latencies and amplitudes on contralateral side. 24 subjects (80%) displayed the Blink-reflex abnormalities. One week after the onset, these changes remained in only 11 (33, 3%) of the patients. Six months after the onset of symptoms, 6 (20%) of the patients still showed the abnormalities of Blink reflex parameters. T'he measurements made one year after the onset showed no significant differences compared to those made six months after the onset. These results suggest that the Blink-reflex is a valuable predictor ' for the recovery prognosis of partial idiopathic facioparesis. The level of dysfunction detected six months after seems to represent the final level of dysfunction.
