Gender Stereotypes in Teaching Materials for Future Entrepreneurs

The main goal of this paper is to analyze gender-sensitive language in the teaching materials used at Vern’ University for Applied Sciences in Zagreb, Croatia. Gender roles are deeply rooted in society and have a strong influence on the interpersonal relations and the perception of one’s abilities. As one of the pillars of socialization, the educational system has a great influence on a young persons’ development, on the way their self- concept is shaped, and on their further orientation through life. Textbook is one of the basic tools used in the educational system as a means of shaping children’s perception. Previous researches of gender- sensitive language in Croatian textbooks have shown that there is still no equal presence of female and male characters in textbooks and that gender roles are still greatly stereotyped. The content analysis results of the gender-sensitive language in textbooks and teaching materials of Vern’ University confirm the results of previous research: gender-neutral language is still not used often enough, so stereotypical role representation is yet to be overcome. As textbook authors, women have achieved a substantial progress, but as subjects of textbooks they are still marginalized.
