Soft tissue profiles in subjects with Class I and Class II division 1 maloclussions

The aim of the study was to determine the difference in thickness of the soft tissue in subjects with Class II/1 and Class I by means of horizontal linear variables on laterolateral radiographs, and to determine differences regarding gender. The study comprised 56 laterolateral radiographs of subjects aged 12 years. The subjects were divided into two groups. Group 1 consisted of 30 subjects who were dental and skeletal Class I (16 boys, 14 girls) and group 2 subjects with Class II/1 maloclussion (11 boys, 15 girls). By joining each landmark on the soft tissues with appropriate landmark on the hard tissues five horizontal lines were obtained. The soft tissue at landmark A were thicker in group 1 in relation to group 2(P=0.018 ; t=2.44). In the boys in group 1 the soft tissue thickness of landmark A was thicker in relation to the girls, and the soft tissue thickness between the genders in group 2 showed differences in the thickness of the lower lip, which was thicker in boys. Analysis of the soft tissue thickness in boys in groups 1 and 2 showed that the soft tissue at landmark A was thicker in boys in group 1. Analysis of the soft tissue thickness between girls in groups 1 and 2 showed statistically significant differences in the area of landmark LS, which means that the upper lip showed greater thickness in the girls in group 1 in relation to the girls in group 2. The greater thickness of the soft tissue at landmarks A and Ls was found in subjects with Class I occlusion.
