Back to the Future of (Post)Socialism: The Afterlife of Socialism in Post-Yugoslav Cultural Space
The chapter address issue of the articulation of socialism in the contemporary post-Yugoslav literature and culture. After the first wave of institutional revision of Yugoslav past in the early 90’s, entering 2000 more and more artistic works emerge which are dealing with socialist past as a site of struggle and negotiation between institutional, collective and individual memories. Pointing on different narrative constructions of the Yugoslav socialism in artistic works of contemporary post-Yugoslav authors (such as Dubravka Ugrešić, Miljenko Jergović, Goran Tribuson, Ratko Cvetnić et al.), and different cultural patterns (journalist discourse, popular culture etc.), the chapter puts focus on the contemporary cultural and social processes in which literature and culture hold specific anthropological role in expressing and representing politics of emotion in the post- Yugoslav cultural space. Since cultural memory also links the past to the present and the future, these texts and practices are interpreted in the context of their creation of the specific politics of memory on socialism which brings the question of what kind of political future socialism has in its post- Yugoslav cultural articulations.
