The application of coastal and standard altimeter data for the study of the impact of sea level rise
The existing multi-mission altimeter observation system meets most of the requirements for monitoring of the absolute sea level and its change over time. However, with the increasing number of the studies on the impact of the sea level rise in coastal areas, a special attention should be paid on reevaluating and improving the absolute sea level modeling, especially for the coastal areas. This study estimates the performance of the methods for computation of the absolute sea surfaces from the standard altimeter data, ALES retracked coastal altimeter data, and the combination of altimeter data and tide gauge data corrected for the vertical land motion. The modeling was performed and evaluated for the area of the Adriatic Sea throughout the altimeter period, from 1992 onwards. Computed models are thereafter used to estimate the possible impact of sea level rise in the eastern Adriatic Sea area, especially in the low-lying coastal zones. To enable that, the sea level data projected over the 21st century were combined with the digital terrain data of the study area and the predictions of the future vertical land motion. The digital terrain data considered within the study were obtained from the global digital terrain models and computed from the data obtained by 3D drone mapping. The predictions of the vertical land motion trends were computed from the synthetic aperture radar imaging and measurements recorded by the global navigation satellite systems at the continuously operated reference stations. The results show the potential effects of sea level rise, including the areas that are expected to be submerged by rising sea levels.
