The Relevance of the Context
Taking into consideration the different discussions of the problem of context, the author has tried to draw out some main facts without which we cannot discuss context or use it as an analytical framework: (1) Context is inseparably interconnected with the meaning of the particular cultural phenomenon or practice that we are researching. If the context is changed, then the meaning is also changed. (2) The relevant context that a researcher uses in their interpretation of some cultural phenomenon or practice is a result of that researcher’s pre-existing knowledge and the meaning that they want to find, i.e., the hypothesis they want to prove. The author emphasizes that we should try to grasp which contexts is relevant for our interlocutors and what kind of meanings they are giving to our object of investigation. If we are trying to interpret and find a meaning in only one "relevant" context, we are actually preventing the multiplicity of the meanings it can have, and in that way making it inexplicable.
