Service life Prediction – the basis for bridge managemement
In framework of invited lecture, the current research project is presented in which University of Zagreb Faculty of Civil Engineering collaborates with the University of Stuttgart and four Croatian road authorities: Croatian motorways, Croatian Roads, City of Zagreb and County roads of Krapina-Zagorje County. The project aim is improvement and application of numerical models for service life prediction on existing structures, since precisely predicted remaining service life of new or existing structures is the basis for optimal bridge management. New approach of pro- active maintenance of concrete bridges is proposed including visual inspection complemented with the non-destructive testing, laboratory experiments and application of numerical model for service life prediction. The first three segments provide assessment of the current bridge condition. The fourth segment, service life prediction, is of great importance, because the numerical model use current bridge condition as input parameters to simulate bridge deterioration in future. The known bridge deterioration processes in the future is the basis for decision on bridge maintenance and repair works.
