Motivation and Successful Learning
This work describes the importance of learner motivation in the second language learning process. The concepts of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation are defined and used as a basis upon which teaching strategies can be developed. Specifically, the paper suggests that strategies should encourage intrinsic motivation. This involves using learner-centered classes which build students' self-esteem. The paper presents several learner-centered teaching approaches including the acknowledgement of different learning styles among students, teaching students how to set short-term and long-term goals, and giving students control over their learning by using intrinsically motivating language tests. The importance of the role of the teacher is also stressed with regard to stimulating intrinsic motivation. The encouragement of creativity and innovation, cooperative learning, as well as problems related to discipline are other topics covered.
