ツーリズムを通した日本語教育

The Japanese language and culture program at the Juraj Dobrila University of Pula incorporates Japanese language in tourism as a compulsory subject for students of single major and as a selective course for students of double major. The reason for this is two-fold. Firstly, tourism is the main industry in Croatia and since the number of tourists from Japan has increased in recent years, there has been an increased need mainly for tourist guides. Secondly, there is a large vocabulary necessary in tourism while also suitable for basic level education, such as words related to time and localities, food etc., but at the same time students can learn usage of honorifics gradually through basic dialogs with customers. Besides that, future graduates may become useful human resources in Japan, which has been recently focused on tourism personell development, for example in hotels or other organizations where there is a need for communication skills including languages other than English, or in Japanese companies in other fields. The course is structures as follows. The first year includes learning communication with customers in different situations and in line with the general Japanese language beginners' course. The second year is in line with the intermediate course and through various topics such as the hotel and inn difference (ryokan) has the role of introducing Japanese culture and building the skill to present local culture. The third year aims at gaining competence in business communication and abilities through training in the tourism field. However, there are a number of challenges. There are still no appropriate textbooks to be used throughout the courses, so preparing the classes takes some time in using various teaching materials and adjusting it to local needs and situation. There might be opinions that countries in question should primarly take a leading role in the development of this education needs unlike the general Japanese language education since it is closely related to the needs of the tourism industry. On the other side, we believe that Japanese goverment should also activelly promote and address these needs as integral part of Japanese language education of foreign learners in different countries.
