Revising strategies for managing employees in subsidiaries of MNCs – Recognizing and charting a strategy predominantly used for subsidiaries in developing countries
The contemporary literature and practice indicate that a distinctive strategy for managing employees in subsidiaries is being used by MNCs with subsidiaries located in developing countries. This paper builds on the recognized shortcomings of the most used and cited classification of strategic IHRM orientations (adaptive, exportive and integrative strategies), and proposes a new classification which adds a fourth strategy (manipulative), being used by MNCs with the intention to cut costs and boost profits in the short term. Using qualitative research with a multiple-case replication design, the proposed classification is tested on data obtained from subsidiaries in one of the developing countries, Croatia.
