The influence of the incommensurately modulated structure on the physical properties of Fe1.35Ge
The interplay between crystal structure, electronic and magnetic properties of materials has been a corner-stone of solid state physics. Here, we report the incommensurately modulated structure of ferromagnetic Fe1.35Ge that originates from the ordering of vacancies present in a high concentration. Such a structure increases the localization of charge carriers that results in almost temperature independent electrical conductivity. Heat propagation is influenced in a similar manner, so that the thermal conductivity of metallic Fe1.35Ge resembles one of quasiperiodic crystals. Seebeck coefficient measurements provide evidence that electrons in this crystal structure have tendency to localize.
