Beyond Formalism in Kant's Fine Art
Without denying Kant’s commitment to formalism – roughly, his claim that the formal features of works of art inspire the feeling of pleasure which grounds one’s aesthetic judgment – we argue that there are elements in his theory of fine art, developed in his Critique of the Power of Judgment, which suggest that he was more appreciative of art’s cognitive potential than strictly formalistic interpretations allow. In particular, his characterization of fine art, his account of aesthetic ideas and his reasons for declaring poetry’s supremacy amongst the arts suggest that the proper interpretation of Kant’s theory of art has to acknowledge a union between formal and cognitive aspects of artwork that he calls for. To show how these elements fit together, we analyse Robert Frost’s poem Design.
